This painting is unusual because of its combination of a dual portrait and a landscape. Probably Gainsborough trying to show off his dual capabilities. This combination of portrait and some activity or other elements is called a “conversation piece”. In Eighteenth century England, a technique once used to communicate the dynamism of dramatic narrative has found a new and divergent use - the stasis of power and property. The painting of Mrs Andrew’s lap is unfinished. Possible left for a future child.
